FAQs

What is the overall purpose of the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation?

The Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation (LSEF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that raises private funds to support Lee’s Summit R-7 Schools. Our mission is to generate and guide philanthropic support to promote excellence in education in our schools. We do that by awarding PEAK Grants to classrooms across the district; awarding continuing education scholarships; providing funds for identified programs districtwide and matching donors’ passions with programs that benefit students and staff.

Why should I donate money to the Foundation? I already pay high taxes in Lee’s Summit, and I know some of my money goes to the school district.

You are wise in investigating where you donate your hard-earned money. With the continual reduction in state funding to our district, it is a necessity to develop a healthy mixture of public and private funds in order to grow and excel. Private contributions leverage limited public funds and maximize taxpayer dollars. More importantly, philanthropy creates enthusiastic partners with a vested interest in “their” school district. To sustain excellence, we must look to those who are equally passionate about the future of the Lee’s Summit R-7 Public Schools and who can provide assistance through endowed giving and other financial support.

Who decides how gifts are used?

Donors work hand in hand with Foundation staff to determine how students will benefit from their generous financial support. Friends of the Foundation and other unrestricted annual support helps provide funding for competitive classroom PEAK (Promoting Excellence And Knowledge) Grants, classroom technology, student scholarships and support or the Excellence for Education Endowment. The use of Endowed Donor Funds is guided by a personalized Gift Agreement drafted for donors by the Foundation Staff. This Gift Agreement clearly articulates the guidelines and distribution of endowed funds from donors (a minimum of $10,000 within three years is required for Endowed Donor Funds).

How can I afford to help students through the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation?

Every single dollar matters and serves as an investment in the students in the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. We are all at different places in life and have varying worthy causes vying for our attention. We want you to know that we appreciate your consideration and value your investment in students.

Are gifts to the Foundation tax deductible?

Yes. Gifts to the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, are fully tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. You should consult with your tax attorney or financial advisor for details.
